Four Colour Process / Litho Printing Most commercial printed matter is printed using the four colour lithographic printing process, so called because four inks are used, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black, each colour is printed separately to build up the full spectrum. Other spot colour inks can also be added to create a 5 or 6 colour job. Because it is necessary at the pre-press stage to create colour separations and printing plates it is uneconomical to use this method of printing for smaller quantities.Digital Printing No printing plates are required so there is no minimum print run, although for longer print runs it becomes uneconomical. Digital printing is ideal for short run quick turnaround work and now with the introduction of new digital presses the quality of reproduction is greatly improved and approaching the same quality as Litho printing.
